It seems to be necessary to explain some facts to be seen and drawn from the Estonia music scene, the environment Vanilla Ninja and Lenna Kuurmaa is in.

It is not easy for people from Germany or the United Kingdom or wherever to understand it.

See: if somebody in Germany sings schlager music, he keeps singing this kind of music until he/she ends the carreer. Imagine Nicole (the one who sung the ESC winning song in Harrogate, "Ein Bisschen Frieden") singing hard rock or opera, impossible! Imagine some rock musician doing pop or even schlager. Impossible to imagine that. Only few like Freddy Mercury the singer of QUEEN did or do so. But for the rest? All are in some kind of genre, and well. they stay there.

The Estonian scene is different.

Somebody singing rock on one day (Vanilla Ninja) would be singing Estonian šlaagrid the next day, and then again Estonian traditional songs, and back to pop. That is why Estonian artists are so versatile. It is the same with Urban Symphony ("Rändajad"), or any other Estonian artist you might know. The other way round is also possible. You got schlager singers who then decide to sing rock or film music.

In this light you must see Vanilla Ninja. Three girls, trying out their abilities. And be honest, Lenna Kuurmaa is one of the best. She can sing children's songs as well as film music or traditional songs or rock. And when she is on stage, you believe that she likes what she is doing there. That makes Estonian music so different and good.

Estonians will always keep a link to traditional composers, Raimond Valgre, Urmas Alender, or Mikk Targo. So we should be proud of that, as they do never forget where they come from. I hope you understand what I try to say.

That's totally right what you write Kurt.
But I think most people from Germany or somewhere else don't understand it, that's why they don't like all the new and different song which Lenna sings...

I am from England (United Kingdom) and if you read the thread about Lenna's new song 'Like A Kid' you will read that I am one of the few posters there that said the same and supported Lenna in her diversity. I have said the same many times on YouTube, and praise Lenna to be able to sing anything. Lenna has the amazing singing talent and has the golden voice, and whatever she sings is just great. Surprised

We are all aware and love Lenna's power, but like the warm bright sunshine, you appreciate it more after a cold dark winter! Variety is good otherwise everything sounds the same, and there is no reason why someone with ability cannot sing opera or rock or even Snoopy. Lenna is exceptional and she can sing anything, so give her credit not stick.
Remember VN's first dedicated concert (Traces Of Sadness) Live in Tallinn? How awesome it was when Lenna sang 'Pie Jetsu' (opera)!? Plus what about when she sang for The Queen, and also before the Brazilian football match!?? All completely different and a bit strange, but all fantastic – even if I could not understand a word of any of it. Laughing

i am not against singing in different styles. its fine. the matter is that the quality of songs is not always good. or i subjuctively dont like most of them. There are some good songs imho-f.e. Pie Jesu, Saatus,Kui on meri hülgehall, songs with zetod....but most of her songs seem to me dull.

+100! That's exactly what I was going to say Very Happy
And my 2nd thought - not only Estonia is so special... there are such "multi-style" singers in other countries as well, but many of them aren't well known outside their country.

I read your opinion with disconcertment! I think I know ALL of lenna's songs (except 'Don't Know Why', which she starts in 'One day with Lenna Kuurmaa.) I confess I love them all equally and play them all equally (or at least I try). When you write 'Most of her songs seem to me dull' I would really like to know, which ones you're referring. Could you please name one or more? Tastes are different, but conerning Lenna it's not understandable for me.

Hm... it seems that I haven't listened to some of the songs you mentioned (Sellel ööl or Fever for example), so my previous post refers only to songs that I know (Just like a kid or Sexy Back for example).

Can't agree with you about Falling Star (one of the VN-2006 times songs that all are great) or Waterloo (I always thought ABBA is an example of high-quality pop music) - so this time our tastes differ, too Cool

huh so maybe that is why they aren't

And my opinion about all this stuff - yes, some ppl like popsy songs; but some ppl dont.
Yes, Lenna's a great singer.
Yes, her voice is magnificent.
But it's all about the style. Open your eyes, ppl who got used to such songs like «Cool vibes» or «Blue tattoo» won't be happy listening to «fever» or «like a kid». Even though Lenna sings all of these songs.

yeah, but take into account, that these are not really her songs (besides Like a Kid,but this is also something else). Most of songs she has sung/still sings, had been sung before,by different artists. It`s just because of that Lenna takes part in different projects and events, where she has to sing something by this or that artist. I don`t think we should consider "Fever" or "Blue Moon" or whatever,as HER songs, because they are not hers. She just arranges them because of different occasions.

Well, I got used to "Cool Vibes", "Blue Tattoo" etc. but I like the other songs too. It's not really about the style - it's about the interpretation and Lenna's interpretations have something magical in them. If she wants to try different genres it's really ok - a good singer can sing everything and Lenna proves she's a magnificent one. It's a pleasure to listen to her songs even only because of her voice. That's my point of view.
